Has anyone tried this migration ? We are concerned that the Lawson Utilities may not be able to cope with the migration of EBCDIC to
ASCII. How does it handle Packed Data fields ?
Are there any issues we need to address ASAP ?
We are getting "no problem" answers from Lawson
Support but I have burnt too many times not to
make sure with the rest of the customer base.
Thanks.

What process are you going to use to do the migration?
1. Environment -> expsysdb -> copy to new Environment -> impexp?
2. Product line -> dbcopy to new product line?
3. dbreorg existing product line?
If you're using any of the supplied Lawson utilities (i.e. the above processes), I agree with Lawson that you'll be fine.

We are still at the stage of examining
the options for migration. We haven't tried
anything because everyone has a different
opinion. Another Lawson DB2 on zOS DBA told me to forget the Lawson utilities because they
tried this migration and got so messed up
they went back to IBM utilties and then
re-pointed the application from the capital "IBM" file. The last Lawson Analyst who looked at this lowered her voice and said "you'd better get the data on to UDB
yourself and then we can help" !!

In other words, those who HAVE tried this have failed and Lawson themselves are running
in the other direction which I might add they
have done several times before. Did you know
that Lawson only recently purchased a test zOS machine and yet claim to have supported it for years ? They had ONE Consultant,
Nadir Doctor who really knew DB2 on zOS
and he has been gone for 2 years now.

We can try the Lawson only methods on Test
machines but I was sure hoping that we would not be the very first to do this !!!

Wow, I can certainly see why you're concerned!

I have to admit I don't have any experience with DB2 on zOS, just with UDB, so I can't speak to the differences with any authority. I can say that for other databases, I have never had any problems--other than running out of disk space!--using the Lawson utilities to move the data between product lines.

I would recommend setting up a test product line and attaching it to DB2 UDB and then using dbcopy to copy some data, say for a couple of key tables. That will at least give you an idea of whether it will work or not.
