For those who were not at CUE and have not seen, Smart Office is now available for maintenance only. No license purchase if completed prior to August! They price it based on the number of heads down users from areas like HR, Finance, Purchasing. Then you pay the maintenance for the year. I expect a flury of activity on this offering and a good deal of converts.

But I've also heard that Smart Office is slower yet then Portal (which is barely tolerable now).

Hi Al - LSO performance is largely dependent upon the Desktop client performance - I've seen it work very nicely on both M3 and S3 platforms; however if your organization has a lot of older Workstation machines they will need to be checked and/or upgraded to support LSO - 1GB RAM min, 100MB disk etc. It is also all SSL based, so SSL could possibly lead to some performance issues on your network , unlike the typical Portal installation. LSO used to be called Lawson Smart Client (exclusive for M3 customers) and then Lawson called the new version Smart Office for both M3 & S3 - but keep in mind it is heavy on the client side, again, unlike Portal. Drop me a note if you would like more specifics - I've done presentations and install on LSO w/PFI in the past etc. RC

I think Rob is on track that it will come down to configuration and hardware. I spoke with a couple people at CUE running it, and they can't live without now.

I did not attend any of the Smart Office sessions, as we don't have any plans to purchase or implement.  But several of our users did, and are all smitten.  They are going to be pushing for it, which I am sure was the whole point of the wow-factor sessions.    I am very curious now.  Years ago, the goal was to use web apps - browser-based applications so that there were no issues of dealing with client installs and machine issues.  Now here we are being fed a client app again, and not only that, we're being told that it will probably replace portal for many people(I heard that in one of my sessions).   What's up with that??

Does anyone have more details on the tech installation of LSO - whether it's mandatory we have a Lawson certified installer/consultant scope us out and deploy it or if it's something we can do ourselves in our internal IT dept? They mention LPS is available for clients who want the "accelerated start" with pre-configured "canvas". I'm curious what the impact of this is for our IT group.

Hi Jessi - Drop me a note and we can talk about this if you like - did it with Zody and Smith for PRB on M3 w/PFI. Have all the installation docs. RC.

This is something we are very interested in, too.... I'm thinking "what about security?", and performance as well. I mean, I don't want end users with the ability to read a benefits screen, pull it down, then do an upload back to it without any sort of audit!

Could you please send me some information that I could pass along to our IT Department.

Did anyone here get in on those Webinars from Lawson 11/21 and 11/22? From the sounds of it, LSO is going to "almost" be required going forward.... and that means Landmark too. Yes, they say that version 10 will run in 'Workspace' but their recommended approach is to run LSO. Unless I am too confused by all of the offerings that were discussed.

LSO will be the power user interface and Workspace will eventually replace Portal where it makes sense (eg if both you have S3 and Infor apps) but portal will continue as a viable option.
Thanks for using the LawsonGuru.com forums!
