We're looking at upgrading everything from 9.0.0.x to 9.0.1.x and wonder if enterprise edition is necessary on database server or not.
we're going form Windows 2003 R2 to Windows 2008 Enterprise R2 and SQL2000 to SQL2005 Enterprise (we think) at the same time that we upgrade the environment and all applications from 9.0.0.x to 9.0.1.x.
However, in monitoring the performance on the existing database server, which has 2GB dedicated to it, it seems to be using a minimal percentage most of the time. So, although we initially planned on doing enterprise edition of Windows 2008 & SQL 2005 on both the database & application servers, we're wondering if that investment is necessary on the database side? We (think that we) know it will be beneficial on the application server because of WebSphere, but it seems like it might be a wasted investment to put it on the db side too.
Does anyone have an opinion on this? Thanks?

It really depends. There are some nice features in SQL 2005 enterprise edition from a DBA point of view, like the ability to rebuild indexes online, but in my opinion, it's not worth that investment on either the windows server or the database server. But it depends on how much data you are pushing through your system, how many other things will be running on those servers, if you are clustering servers. If you are going to Windows 2008 R2, make sure you are patched up. We ran into some issues when we implemented on Windows 2008 R2 with Lawson.

Although we are not sql server here. We are an Oracle shop for Lawson. We found that we needed the enterprise edition of Oracle because of materialized views that we had built and were/are using for reporting uses. I'm sure that there are other features available at the DBA level as well, but just one that sticks out in my (non-dba) mind.
